Discover the Cover – May 2021: The New Porsche Panamera

Presented by Porsche Cars North America – A little over a decade ago, we decided we were going to make a sports car unlike any we’ve ever made before. One that had all the personality and performance of a Porsche, but in an entirely new form. A sedan. To do it, we did as we always have. We got to work. We sketched. We tested. We researched. We developed. We redeveloped. And redeveloped some more. It was long hours. It was late nights. And eventually, it was the Panamera. The first sedan to bear the Porsche name.

May21 PorscheCover 3D

Conventionalists called it crazy. Skeptics were not in short supply. It was a bold form factor in a sea of familiarity. Different. Loud. Brazen. It was a Porsche.

Since that first generation took the automotive world by storm, our desire to create a better one has stayed in drive. We have never put our pencils down. Our thumbs have continuously punched stopwatches.

may21 porsche 2

And our expectations of craftsmanship and design have only heightened. We have kept sketching, testing, researching, and developing. Making it better. Making it faster. Making it real.

Introducing the new Panamera.

may21 porsche 3

The fastest, most well-appointed, most customizable Panamera ever. One with sharper design, heightened performance, and more ways to make it your own than ever before.

As with every sports car we’ve ever made, it is more than a machine. It is a benchmark. Yet another one from a company famous for them. And proof of what can happen, when you never stop driving.

The new Panamera.

Dealer Details: Motorcar Gallery

Presented by Motorcar Gallery– South Florida has a pace of life all its own. In a world of luxury real estate, mega yachts, and supercars many small car dealers have not been able to survive the fast lifestyle that exists. However, there is one respite amid the hustle & bustle of Fort Lauderdale. It is there you will find a family business that emphasizes customer service above all else. Motorcar Gallery has been in the classic car business since 1984. Their iconic location on U.S.1 is blocks from Las Olas, and it has become a Mecca for those of us who share a love for classics.

A growing backlash among our fans is directed at the mega-dealers. The massive conglomerates have forced many small stores like this out of business while transforming customers into statistics. The employees at Motorcar Gallery have over 200 years in sales and service of the world’s most coveted cars. Not only can they help you make an informed purchase, but their staff is also available around the clock to offer service, storage, and delivery of your classic.

You are not a number, and your repeat business is why Motorcar Gallery is able to shine brighter than any corporate behemoth. This is easily seen as you drive past the showroom. Instead of packing the floor with the latest arrivals, Motorcar Gallery knows each car has a story to tell. In fact, knowing how each car made it here is worth your time. The love of cars is what motivates this team to go above and beyond what you have experienced before, so click here for an experience you won’t regret.

P.S. Here is a taste of what you will see in the showroom:

RM Sotheby’s Arizona 2021: 2019 Koenigsegg Regera

Presented by RM Sotheby’s

KOENIGSEGG VS. THE WORLD

The idea of building one’s own supercar to compete with the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren would generally be considered ludicrous, what with the monumental strides these companies have made in automotive technology and performance over the past decades. How could one man’s vision compete with such established sporting pedigree and record-setting engineering?

From time to time, however, someone does indeed attempt such a feat and, on even rarer occasions, succeeds brilliantly. Such is the case with the Swedish manufacturer Koenigsegg. Christian von Koenigsegg created his supercar company in 1994; his aspiration was to build nothing short of the greatest supercar in history. Over the next three years, with help from a small but highly skilled group, a prototype was constructed using a radical carbon fiber tub and a litany of automotive engineering firsts. This car, named the Koenigsegg CC (Competition Coupé), was first publicly displayed at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, and the reaction from public and press alike was overwhelming. Confident his cars would find buyers, Christian left Cannes with nothing other than production on his mind.

Over the course of the past 26 years, the Koenigsegg name has become nigh synonymous with absolute mechanical absurdity. Hollow carbon fiber wheels capable of speeds over 280 mph? Koenigsegg. 3-D printed turbochargers? Koenigsegg. A single-state torque converter able to handle over 1,400 lb ft of torque? Koenigsegg. What about a hybrid-drive motor pushing over 1500 horsepower? Koenigsegg has figured that out as well.

From speed records to innovative patents, each subsequent Koenigsegg product has triggered worldwide astonishment; this 2019 Koenigsegg Regera is quite possibly the most outrageous exhibition of automotive technology ever offered for sale to the public.

2019 Koenigsegg Regera 8

THE REGERA

The Regera’s concept form was first unveiled to the world at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. One year later, the heavily tweaked production version made its debut at the same venue. The Regera retains Koenigsegg’s most distinctive design feature, a pair of Dihedral Synchro-helix doors, which open both outwards and upwards in a unique fashion to improve egress and ingress in close quarters. Another unique build characteristic is the car’s convertible top. Thanks to the inherent structural rigidity of the car’s carbon fiber monocoque, the roof can be removed, turning the car into one of the fastest convertibles ever produced. Even more incredible is that the top can be securely stowed away in one piece in the car’s nose, allowing for the roof to be kept with the car at all times. Though it clearly utilizes an evolution of Koenigsegg’s distinctive aesthetics, materials, and construction, the Regera is, in truth, quite a step forward.

The Regera’s most revolutionary innovations lie within its hybrid-drive powertrain. Aptly named the “Koenigsegg Direct Drive” system, the Regera’s 5.0-liter V-8 engine produces over 1,000 horsepower thanks to a pair of 3-D printed variable turbochargers and patented exhaust system which altogether removes turbo lag. An 800-volt battery system utilizing F1-derived technology is mounted aft of the engine and mated to Koenigsegg’s “Hydro-coup” torque converter—a remarkable and unique single-state drive mechanism which replaces the need for a gearbox. Finally, a supplemental trio of electric motors mounted on each drive shaft (one main, one on each rear half-axle shaft) are programmed to smooth out power delivery at low engine speeds, providing an additional 700 horsepower for use across the Regera’s already-staggering power band. At the time of cataloging, the Regera holds the world record for 0-250 mph-0, executed in an alarmingly agile 31.49 seconds.

2019 Koenigsegg Regera 12
2019 Koenigsegg Regera 2

CHASSIS NUMBER 175

This Regera offered here is the 175th Koenigsegg chassis produced, and one of just 80 Regeras built between 2016 and 2020. Like all Koenigsegg chassis, it is a unique, alluring, and absolutely extreme creation. Chassis 175 is the first Regera offered to the public via auction; there is no other chassis exactly like it, and as such, it is unlikely to be mirrored in the public marketplace anytime soon.

Delivered new to Lake Forest Sports Cars of Chicago, Illinois, it is clad in Crystal White over a bespoke interior; both exterior and interior are enriched by a magnificent bevy of optional “clear” carbon fiber finishes. Furthermore, the exterior “Speedster” graphics package is specifically finished with a healthy volume of 24 karat gold leaf detail, slung with dramatic effect across the front splitter. Chassis 175 sits upon a staggered set of Tresex pattern “Aircore” wheels which utilize Koenigsegg’s innovative hand-laid, multi-lam, pre-impregnated carbon fiber construction to provide ultimate grip and unrivaled weight savings. The Tresex pattern is a more recent structural improvement upon earlier multi-spoke Aircore wheels provided to Koenigsegg models. Overall, the accompanying scan of Chassis 175’s original window sticker illustrates over $217,000 USD of optional and bespoke equipment.

In July of 2020, the consignor treated Chassis 175 to a full exterior protective regimen executed by noted specialists at Protective Film Solutions in Santa Ana, California; an XPEL Ultimate Clear Bra was applied to the entire exterior, with additional protection provided to the rear diffuser and front windshield. Chassis 175 is presently offered for sale with all its original accoutrements, as well as service records and original window sticker.

This vehicle will be offered at RM Sotheby’s 22nd annual Arizona sale, kicking off its 2021 auction calendar at the OTTO Car Club on Friday, 22 January. It will join approximately 80 blue-chip motor cars, and the sale will be a live event with limited attendance; online and phone bidding options are available by contacting RM Sotheby’s.

Three Bugatti Divos Delivered By Bugatti Beverly Hills

Almost three years ago, Bugatti owners were invited to a private dinner party in Beverly Park. While the official purpose was to celebrate the arrival of the Chiron Sport, a few guests were invited down into the wine cellar. There, Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann presented them with drawings and a few details of his upcoming project. Fast forward to Christmas 2020, and three Bugatti Divos have been delivered by Bugatti Beverly Hills.

Bugatti Divo Hypercar Unboxing by Bugatti Beverly Hills – First on the West Coast

In order for their customers to fully experience what the cars are capable of, O’Gara Motorsport is located at Thermal Club raceway. It was there that owners saw the cars in their natural habitat, on the track. These three cars (Blue, Grey & Silver) represent a focus on outperforming every competitor. Having 1,500 horsepower, speed and acceleration is not a problem. Therefore, the engineers turned their attention to handling and cornering. Albert Divo won the Targa Florio race racing for Ettore Bugatti, so these cars are an homage to his abilities.

To compete on the world’s toughest tracks, downforce was increased by 200 lbs. This lowered the top speed to ONLY 236 mph but whose counting? Being able to hold 1.6g in the corners is an attribute only shared with purpose-built race cars, and it took a clean-sheet redesign of the suspension to pull it off. Because the Divo doesn’t share many components with Bugatti models past or present, only 40 cars will be offered. Having a trio of them in one location is an event that won’t happen again. Because they have a finger on the pulse of the SoCal supercar scene, only O’Gara Group could pull this off.

Working with Mr. Winkelmann, this event was over two and a half years in the making. Tim O’Hara is the General Manager of Bugatti Beverly Hills, and he had this to say: “The process of designing the liveries of these cars has been cathartic for both the clients and me. It showed us what’s possible and reinvigorated our excitement for what’s to come. To see these spectacular automobile works of art go from that piece of paper to sitting here in front of me is a phenomenal feeling. It was a very involved and lengthy process that demanded our best skills and expertise. To deliver 4 of only 40 to be built in the world and see the project through fruition is deeply gratifying.”

Needless to say, only the O’Gara Group could procure four of the forty Bugatti Divos to be offered, each one being built to order. Your dreams can become a reality thanks to having a dedicated team at your disposal.

Fiat 1950’s Supercar, the Fiat 8V Coupe, At RM Sotheby’s Elkhart Collection Auction

FIAT OTTO VU

Of all the famed Italian automakers, Fiat is not normally recognized as producing lavish, coachbuilt grand touring cars. The Italian automaker’s first engines were four-cylinder units, often of enormous size. Fiat produced its first six-cylinder engine in 1907 and even a V-12 from 1921 to 1922. However, it was not until 1952 that Fiat would produce an eight-cylinder power plant.

The 8V, or Otto Vu in Italian, was built for two years only, with production of 114 examples, and remains one of the marque’s most legendary motor cars to this day. It was the star of the Geneva Salon in March 1952, and it goes without saying that this new Fiat got lots of attention from the motoring press. Road & Track called it “the biggest surprise of the year,” and The Motor remarked that “the last thing which had been expected from Italy’s largest car factory was a truly streamlined 2-seater saloon.” With its potent new power plant, which was clothed by bodies designed by the world’s finest coachbuilders, everyone knew that this was truly a special automobile in every sense of the word.

CHASSIS NUMBER 000047

The distinctively handsome Vignale-bodied coupe shown here, chassis number 000047, was originally exported to Turin on 11 June 1953 finished in verde. The design is distinguished by its flared rear fenders, forming finned flying buttresses on either side of the decklid and inset rear window; a distinctive oval radiator opening flanked by chrome “bumperettes” (echoed in the rear) and carrying a simple egg-crate insert; and delicate chrome trim around the doorsills and windows. Features of the car, including the round headlights and the design of the front fenders, are echoed in other Vignale designs of the period, including OSCAs and Ferrari 375 Americas. Low windows and a high beltline exaggerate the power and personality of the lines. The interior is understated, yet elegant, with pleated leather bucket seats facing a dashboard with a full complement of simple round Veglia gauges.

As noted in Tony Adriaensens’s Otto Vu, the car is believed to have first been displayed at the VII Concorso d’Eleganza di Roma on 12–13 June 1954, though slight trim differences later noted put this up for debate. The car was then delivered to its original owner, Alberto Carpanelli, of Alessandria. It was first registered as AL 40085 on 9 July 1954 and was later re-registered in Perugia as PG 30151. Further records indicate that the car was exported to the United States from Genoa sometime around 1957, at which point it had been refinished in a darker green than the original hue. In 1960, the 8V was registered in California by Phil Hildreth, who subsequently sold the car, along with another Fiat, to Al Johnston.

By 1971 the car was registered to Gerald Hoskins of Los Angeles and then to another local man by the name of Dan Smith. Smith in turn sold the car to John O’Donnell of New Jersey, from whom it was then acquired by Jarl de Boer in April 1982. At this time the car was added to the “Registry of Italian Oddities” by his son and noted historian of such Italian cars, John de Boer. Several years later the car was reunited with its original engine, which had been replaced around 1964 during Al Johnston’s ownership. The de Boers retained the 8V until 1988 when it was sold to Tom Hart of Reno, Nevada and subsequently purchased by the Blackhawk Collection in Southern California.

The 8V was refinished in red over a tan leather interior as part of the restoration, which was completed in 1990. Two years later, it was bought by Erich Traber, in whose Swiss collection it remained for 25 years before the current owner acquired it. Well preserved, the car is noteworthy for retaining its matching-numbers engine, as is documented in historian Tony Adriaensens’s book, Otto Vu. Many 8Vs were driven rather hard by their original owners, commonly resulting in the loss of its original power plant, but this example’s early historical documentation meant that its original engine was preserved and ultimately reunited with the car.

As one of very few 8Vs still with their original engine, and with its striking and attractive Vignale design, this is among the most exciting surviving examples of the world-famous Otto Vu, an Italian “supercar” of the Jet Age.

This vehicle will be offered without reserve in RM Sotheby’s Elkhart Collection, taking place 23-24 October as a live and online sale. View additional lots and register to bid online at RMSothebys.com.

The Best 90’s Cars You Can Buy Today

Once the Cold War came to an end, society had reason for optimism. Powerful computers that were designed to make war could now be utilized by the automotive world. This allowed the 90’s to see horsepower, torque, and fuel mileage increase by orders of magnitude. A 1990 Ferrari Testarossa made a whopping 375 horsepower. The Pagani Zonda arrived 9 years later with 555 horsepower, setting the stage for the modern hypercar. Learning to drive in the 90’s, I survived the Geo Tracker to aquire a 5.7-liter IROC Camaro. It made 350 lb-ft of torque from idle to 4,500 rpm, and it was a preview that the slow car era of the 80s would soon be far behind us. Tell us your ultimate 90’s car in the comments below!

1990 BMW M3

$84,999 :: 108,548 miles

was intended to be a homologation special to satisfy the DTM series and Group A Touring racing, which required a total of 5,000 cars to be built. It was presented to the public at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show and began production from March 1986 to June 1991. The E30 M3 was mainly produced in the coupé body style, but limited volumes of convertibles were also produced. The front splitter, the rear apron, sill panels, as well as changes to the body in the area of the rear window (C-pillar) and the boot lid improved the aerodynamics. For aerodynamic reasons, the rear window was flattened and the tailgate was made of light, glass-reinforced plastic raised by approximately 40 mm for better airflow. The changes in the rear area resulted in lower lift forces and better straight-line stability. In addition, the windscreen was glued in – not, as with the other E30 models, framed with a window rubber and piping. As a result, the M3 achieved a relatively low drag coefficient of Cd=0.33 instead of Cd=0.38 as in the standard 3 Series. The only exterior body panels the regular 3 Series and the M3 shared were the hood, roof panel, sunroof, and inner door panels.
