Sport Sedan 90s Style: This Motorweek Review Of The 1995 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG Is A Neat Slice Of History

The idea of a sports sedan is something that has been present and accounted for in the modern sense of the American automotive market for about 40 years at this point. The BMW M3 broke the mold, the Taurus SHO brought it to the common man, and Mercedes was comparatively slow to enter the came, dropping the E36 AMG in the middle 1990s. Now since those days, the idea has morphed with more horsepower and more hardcore performance but as you will see in this video, when the Mercedes came into the fold, everyone took notice.

It’s kind of a quaint thing to think about but this car with its 268hp, 15.3-second quarter mile times, and beefier suspension was really a rock star back then. They were sold in really limited numbers as you’ll hear. Yes, only 1,000 were going to be built over the planned three year run of the car which was a partnership between Mercedes and AMG. Today you can buy a Toyota Camry that would bury this thing in about every respect. That said, the E36 AMG is still cooler.

There’s no turbocharger, there’s no active driver controlled suspension adjustments, hell there isn’t even a manual transmission on the option sheet! We’d still like to have one of these cars because when we were teenagers they were a hot ticket. Remember when these came out? What did you think back then? What do you think now?

Making Six Out Of Four: Watch England’s Allen Millyard Create A Set Of Kawasaki Z1 Six Cylinder Jugs!

Making Six Out Of Four: Watch England’s Allen Millyard Create A Set Of Kawasaki Z1 Six Cylinder Jugs!

We have been showing you some cool videos recently shot by a guy named Allen Millyard in England. This dude creates wild, factory-looking custom motorcycles in his little garage and shed and he does it all basically by hand. In this video we see him take a couple sets of Kawasaki Z1 four cylinder jugs and make a six cylinder set for an engine he is custom creating. The process is fascinating, cool, and something that he makes look really easy but certainly isn’t.

Millyard is a hot rodder of the highest level and his medium is motorcycles. From building a 5-liter V-twin engine and riding it around on a custom chassis to doing stuff like this, he always has neat ideas and has the time, the guile, and the knowledge to make them all work. It’s all so simple on paper, right? Cut some stuff up, weld it back together, and just go ahead and make it perfect so that they fit onto a block you also modified. No sweat! We love his videos because they are really step by step trips through the process of his many, many builds.

We’re going to keep following this one and frankly, having seen this part of the process we should probably show you how he modified the block, tomorrow. Right? Smart guy with basic tools and a really awesome approach. What’s not to love here?

Learn How To Shape Metal With An English Wheel – Metal Shaping For Beginners English Wheel Basics

I don’t know why, but we car guys always seem to want all the cool tools, even if we don’t know how to use them. An English Wheel, for example, is one of those tools that most hot rodders do NOT have in their garage, but that all the coolest shops seem to have. So whenever any of us see those cool shops, whether in person or on tv, all we want is all the stuff they have. And so English Wheels are something everyone wants even if they don’t work sheet metal or know how to use one. I’ve used one a couple of times, but mastering one puts you in special company.

You can’t become a master if you don’t start as a beginner, so check out this cool video that is a beginner’s guide to using an English Wheel. I’m going to get myself one when I get the new shop done just so I can learn out to use it and not be the guy that just has one in the corner looking cool. Although I do want to pinstripe mine, cause that’s cool and everything looks better with pinstripes.

Check out the video below, and let us know what you think.

Flying Fords, Furious Noise: Here’s The 10 Best Ford Moments From Goodwood SpeedWeek 2020

Flying Fords, Furious Noise: Here’s The 10 Best Ford Moments From Goodwood SpeedWeek 2020

Ford’s history in motorsports is very well documented. From the earliest days of Henry taking on Mr. Winton and kicking his ass to guys like Barney Oldfield setting speed records on ice in the 999 to the incredible 1960s wen the company’s “Total Performance” era was set on nothing short of global domination, racing has been the lifeblood of Ford. In many ways, this continues today. Road racing, NASCAR, NHRA drag racing, small tire stuff, etc. Fords can be found throwing down.

In this video from Goodwood SpeedWeek 2020, we get a look at the top 10 Ford moments from the event. Like everything at Goodwood, these are varied and cool. From rallying Escorts to 1990s Trans-Am Mustangs, there’s a wide array of Ford power and beauty on display.

We’re not sure if the world of 2020 still has the same mindset when it comes to automotive rivalries that other decades had. Ford vs Chevrolet was it for decades. We’re just not so sure that is true. It’s like every company for themselves and Ford continues to be a player.

This celebration of their history in motion and at wide open throttle is fantastic.

Watch This Odd Hand-Plane and Chisel Combo Tool From 1878 Get Made From The Original Patent Drawings!

Watch This Odd Hand-Plane and Chisel Combo Tool From 1878 Get Made From The Original Patent Drawings!

Normally when we check in on the Hand Tool Rescue channel there is some sort of awesome old apparatus being brought back to its former glory. We have seen all manner of things from saws to massive clamps reinvigorated and given a new lease on life but this is a new one on us. You are going to see Mr Hand Tool Rescue create this odd hand-plane and chisel combo tool from 1878 using the patent drawings that were filed by the inventor! Using raw stock, raw materials and applying this wood working, machining, and other talents we see bar stock become handles, flat stock become blades, and all of it come together in a pretty beautiful finished product.

There is even a really cool payoff at the end which serves as kind of closure and as kind of a plot twists as well which made us smile. This is one of the videos that has some narration along with it, which we dig. Getting into the mind of the guy doing the work beyond just seeing his hands is cool and informative.

This is craftsmanship and we dig that around here. Old school methods resulting in the fine old school product that was envisioned from the beginning!

Steve Torrence, Matt Hagan, Erica Enders and Matt Smith Clinch NHRA World Finals In Vegas!

(Photos by Mike & Jeff Burghardt and Timothy Heather – Words courtesy of NHRA Communications) – All four points leaders in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series finished the job on Sunday, as Steve Torrence, Matt Hagan, Erica Enders and Matt Smith claimed world championships during the 20th annual Dodge NHRA Finals presented by Pennzoil at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Torrence picked up his third straight championship in Top Fuel, Hagan claimed his third career world title in Funny Car, Pro Stock’s Enders won her fourth title and Smith earned his fourth championship in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Hagan and Enders both won the race as well. Antron Brown (Top Fuel) and Angie Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also winners on Sunday at the final event of the 2020 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

Torrence clinched his championship almost immediately on Sunday when veteran Doug Kalitta lost in the opening round. But the Texan, who became just the third driver in NHRA Top Fuel history to win three straight world titles, turned in another impressive showing by advancing to his seventh final round in 10 races in 2020 in his 11,000-horsepower Capco Contractors dragster. He finished the year with four victories, continuing a dominating stretch that has included 24 wins — and now three championships — over the last three seasons.

“I’m proud of my team -– Richard Hogan, Bobby Lagana, all of those guys who give heart and blood to be out here and do this -– it’s unbelievable,” Torrence said. “Three championships in three years. The success that we had, we’re just a bunch of hillbilly pipeliners from east Texas and to be out here and do this is unreal. I thank my mom and dad who support me, and my wife who supports me. I don’t get emotional much, but this is different. Thanks to everybody for everything. It’s unreal.

“Doug Kalitta is the fiercest competitor out here and they have fought hard for so many years, I want to kick myself in the butt for robbing that guy, but it’s truly a blessing to be here. I’ve had a lot of highlights in my career and this is going to be right up there at the top.”

Brown beat Torrence in the final round, going 3.759-seconds at 315.34 mph in his Matco Tools dragster to pick up his first win in more than two years. Brown, who now has 51 career victories, beat Tony Schumacher, Clay Millican and Billy Torrence to reach the finals.

“It feels great and it was a whole team effort,” Brown said. “Everyone is working hard and we’re looking forward to next year. Everybody stuck with us and it’s a process. We just never gave up when the chips were down. We stayed persistent.”

Hagan clinched his third world title when Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. lost in the semifinals, and he finished the day in championship fashion, going 3.914 at 326.40 in his 11,000-horsepower Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye to beat Ron Capps in the final round. The Funny Car year was dominated by DSR drivers, as they won every race in 2020, but it was Hagan who came out on top.

He won for the third time in 2020, 36th time in his career and handed Don Schumacher Racing its 14th straight victory in the class. Hagan was splendid when NHRA returned to racing in July, winning the first event at Indy and holding the points lead over the final four races. He beat Cruz Pedregon, Paul Lee and Alexis DeJoria to reach the final round, capping off his year in an impressive way. Hagan and Brown’s victories also gave DSR its second straight double-up in the nitro categories and 67th overall.

“It’s been a dogfight the whole time,” Hagan said. “This race, this championship was for my brother I lost three years ago. It still hurts, but this kind of stuff, he’s riding with me. We had to battle it out and I can’t say enough about how proud I am of (crew chief) Dickie Venables and all my guys. They bust their butts each day and I try to drive the wheels off this thing.

“We’ve got a hell of a team with Don Schumacher Racing, Dodge SRT, Pennzoil, Mopar. Everybody that’s been a part of this, I can’t thank you enough. I love my team, I love my guys and I love everybody who allows us to do this. I also love our NHRA fans. They allow us to get this adrenaline going at 300 mph, and I just love it. I’m in awe of my guys right now.”

Enders made NHRA history on Sunday, as her fourth world championship gave her the most for any female in NHRA history. She clinched her second straight world title early in the day when Jason Line and Jeg Coughlin Jr. both lost in the first round. It set off an emotional celebration for Enders, but she wasn’t done, rolling to her fourth victory of the season and 29th in her career.

She beat Alex Laughlin, Troy Coughlin Jr. and No. 1 qualifier Greg Anderson to reach the final round, going 6.643 at 206.39 in her Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro to beat first-time finalist Kyle Koretsky. It gave Enders her seventh career win in Vegas and second straight at the facility, finishing off a challenging year in emphatic fashion.

“It’s no secret that I’ve struggled this year, the last couple of years honestly,” Enders said. “It’s been an uphill battle. I speak so highly of these guys, and I mean it from the bottom of my heart. Between (crew chiefs) Rick Jones, Mark Ingersoll and Rickie Jones, (team owner) Richard Freeman has organized the most amazing group of people. All of these guys, they give their lives to this. I could not be more proud. I’m so blessed. I’ve never been in a situation like that where I’ve depended on other people to handle it for us. I love this life I get to live.”

M. Smith’s championship dream became reality when Eddie Krawiec fell in the second round. He also did his job on his Denso/Stockseth/MSR EBR, beating three-time champ Angelle Sampey in the opening round and defending champ Andrew Hines a round later. The four-time champion was a step ahead of the class for most of the season, qualifying in the No. 1 spot five times, winning twice and advancing to three final rounds. He also won the Mickey Thompson Pro Bike Battle, becoming just the fourth rider in Pro Stock Motorcycle history to win four championships.

“This was a long hard deal today,” M. Smith said. “That [Vance & Hines] group played their cards right and I had to race them in the first and second rounds. If you want to be the champ you have to beat the champ and I just beat the champ [Hines] to win this, so we are the champions. I can’t thank Denso and Mark Stockseth enough for what they do for me.”

A. Smith gave the husband and wife team another reason to smile on Sunday, picking up her second career victory with a run of 6.917 at 194.83 on her Denso EBR to beat Steve Johnson in the final round. She advanced to the championship round with wins against Katie Sullivan, Scotty Pollacheck and Hector Arana Jr.

“You never know when you’re going to get back here, and I’m so emotional,” A. Smith said. “I want to thank my team. They have built me up and have told me to never give up. This one’s for them.”

The 2021 NHRA season begins with the 52nd annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, March 12-14 at Gainesville Raceway.

Original Post

Yep, the sad news that Drag Week 2020 was cancelled happened a few days ago, and it makes us sad but is not surprising. With one of the tracks closing for the year weeks ago, and at least one other track wanting to get out of holding the event, there wasn’t much hope on our end that this thing was actually going to happen. But thinking it would be cancelled and it actually getting cancelled are two different things and so it sucks for everyone that counts on this event each and every year. In this video you’ll see Alex and Dennis Taylor talking about the event, the cancellation, and hinting at something else that is maybe possibly kinda in the works. Trust me, that isn’t a click bait routing any more than the video title is. There is something in the works to try and salvage the time off and everything else for Drag Week Racers. So don’t cancel the vacation plans yet. The route won’t be the same, but the time frame would be, so keep those dates open!

I wish we could give you all the details and info right now, but things are still in the works and still not confirmed. But know that there is a promoter out there working to make this a reality for everyone.

Until we have 100% confirmation we won’t say anything more. But rest assured that when it is 100% we will tell the world.

Wrenching On A 1949-1951 Ford? Make Sure You Upgrade To Power Steering With Borgeson!

We all love old cars around here. The fact that they represent history, they represent evolution, and they represent the kind of mechanical progress that an industry was built on all play a part into our automotive fandom. They are also a blank canvas which can be made into the builder’s or owner’s vision is the other big deal here. Cars like the iconic 1949-1951 Ford have long served as the puddy in the hands of hot rodders. These famed “shoebox” Fords are about as cool as they come and when repowered with modern engines and transmissions, the fun goes through the roof. There is one part of the program that can always use attention in these older cars, the steering.

Converting your 1949-1951 Ford to power steering is absolutely no problem with this kit from our pals at Borgeson. The steering box, the mounting bracket, the hardware, and the arm are all included here. Pumps and hoses can also be had with more details to be found on the website linked below.

Why would you want to have a cool old Ford that has the steering ratio of a cruise liner? You don’t. Upgrade with this kit and you get a nice ratio power steering box that virtually installs itself. You are not going to be figuring out brackets or how to mount stuff, that work has already been done.

Borgeson has an incredible product line, make sure you visit the website and check out what they have to fit your application. From modern muscle cars and trucks to iconic classics, they have what you want.

Unveiled: 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 – A Limited-Edition Gap Between The GT And The Shelby

When Ford last mentioned the “Mach 1” nameplate, there was a genuine risk that the hallowed Mustang model would wind up as an electric crossover SUV. Fans went nuts, media folk had twitching eyes, and the question on everybody’s mind: why?! The Mach 1 Mustang is an institution unto itself…it was the Mustang that had flash and dash, the loaded-for-bear model that packed a punch, had the good interior, and a bit of flair with it’s styling. And yes, that does include the big-boy 1971-73 Mustangs that rocked the Mach 1 look, and the Mustang II variants that, compared to the Cobra, came across as super-clean and simple, with some of the sporting touches. At least it wasn’t festooned with pinstriping on every last body line. But with the exception of the lone 2003-04 Mach 1 revival on the New Edge car, the Mach 1 name has been missing from the Mustang lineup in favor of other models that slot above the GT: Bullitt, Terminator, Shelby. That ends next spring.

DEARBORN, Mich., June 16, 2020 – After a 17-year hiatus, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 fastback coupe makes its world premiere – becoming the modern pinnacle of style, handling and 5.0-liter V-8 pony car performance.

“Bold styling, great acceleration and speed – Mach 1 says it all,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s chief operating officer. “This is one of those special Mustangs that truly brings a smile to the faces of our owners, enthusiasts and fans – including me – so there’s never been a better time to bring back Mach 1 and have it go global too.”

Ford’s quest for speed began with Henry Ford in 1901 and the company’s roots within aerospace only furthered its desire to deliver quicker, faster and more powerful vehicles. Calling back Chuck Yeager’s feat becoming the first to break the sound barrier – Mach 1 – Ford delivered its original Mach 1 in 1969, setting 295 speed and endurance records in its first model year at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Thanks to its added handling capability, Mach 1 teams earned back-to-back SCCA Manufacturer’s Rally Championships in 1969 and 1970.

Like the original, the all-new Mach 1 bridges the gap between Mustang GT and Shelby® models, delivering V-8 power, unique functional aerodynamic enhancements, competition-capable suspension upgrades and a driver-focused cockpit.

All-new Mach 1 muscle

The all-new Mustang Mach 1 is set to become the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever, courtesy of a newly designed front end, plus Ford Performance parts from Mustang Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500 models and an available Handling Package for greater at-limit handling.

Packing a specially calibrated 5.0-liter V8 engine that has a projected 480 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm, Mach 1 is a fitting celebration of a nameplate born more than 50 years ago.

Integrated into the Mach 1 engine are revised Shelby GT350 components including the intake manifold, oil filter adapter and engine oil cooler, increasing engine oil cooling capability by 50 percent.

The all-new version leans on decades of Ford Performance learnings, wearing a uniquely crafted front end for aerodynamic efficiency and a host of Ford Performance parts that help celebrate its iconic heritage. Mach 1 comes standard with a Tremec3160 6-speed manual transmission from the Shelby GT350. For the first time, Ford has outfitted the system with rev-matching and the transmission is paired with the GT350 oil cooler system and Mustang GT’s twin-disc clutch and short-throw shifter.

Drivers can also opt for an available 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with an upgraded torque converter and unique calibration that enables optimizing torque capability, shift character and overall enhanced performance. A second air-to-oil cooler increases cooling capacity by 75 percent.

Recapturing Mach 1 style

The all-new Mach 1’s grille harkens back to the original with a deep 3-D mesh, shark-nosed section and faux lamp elements. Flanking the fascia are new side grilles below each turn signal lamp. A low-gloss Magnetic pony badge is centered on the grille. Low-gloss magnetic and black accents throughout the vehicle provide a premium look while staying true to Mach 1’s bold, muscular heritage, including low-gloss Magnetic mirror caps and rear spoiler.

New 19-inch x 9.5-inch, and 19-inch x 10-inch five-spoke Tarnished Dark-painted aluminum wheels are a modern version of the classic Magnum 500 style wheels. Handling Package vehicles come standard with unique, wider 19-inch x 10.5-inch front, and 19-inch x 11-inch rear Tarnished Dark-painted aluminum wheels.

The Handling Package – exclusively available with the Tremec 3160 6-speed manual transmission – also includes a larger unique higher downforce front splitter, new front wheel lip moldings, and a low-gloss Magnetic swing spoiler with a Gurney flap and rear tire spats from Shelby GT500.

Satin Black side and hood stripes are included with reflective accent stripes in any of three colors: Red, White and Orange (Appearance Package only). Exterior color options include the Mach 1 exclusive Fighter Jet Gray (Appearance Package only), as well as Iconic Silver, Shadow Black, Oxford White, Velocity Blue, Twister Orange, Race Red and Grabber Yellow.

The interior features a unique Dark Spindrift instrument panel with aluminum accents. Ebony seats with an accent stripe hint at Mach 1 heritage in cars equipped with a leather interior. Other interior upgrades include new door sill plates, an updated splash screen on the 12.3-inch all-LCD instrument cluster, a white cue ball shift knob, and engraved badging that displays the vehicle’s unique chassis number.

Mach 1: Built to perform

The Mach 1 engineering and design teams worked in tandem to develop a front end unique to the Mach 1 persona that also meets the high aerodynamic demands of the engine, transmission and braking systems.

A new two-piece upper grille, lower grille and valance, and new side grilles, all contribute to Mach 1’s signature look and more demanding aero and cooling performance requirements.

A front splitter optimized to the fascia shape improves track performance and provides a more aggressive appearance, while a matched rear spoiler works in concert to create ideal lift balance. Mach 1 features 22 percent more downforce than a Mustang GT with Performance Pack Level 1 and the downforce improvement jumps to approximately 150 percent with the Handling Package.

To enhance track endurance, the team added two side heat exchangers – one to cool engine oil, the other transmission oil – as well as a rear axle cooling system and lower diffuser from Shelby GT500.

A new underbelly pan, the vehicle’s most aerodynamically important upgrade, extends 20 inches further rearward than on a Mustang GT Performance Pack to smooth and increase the airflow under the front of the car. Large underwing features in the belly pan increase downforce, while special belly pan airfoils in the brake cooling ramps improve downforce and assist the brake cooling flow – a first for Mustang.

To improve ride and handling, Mach 1 features the latest MagneRide calibration, a stiffer steering I-shaft, new EPAS calibration, stiffer sway bars and front springs, a brake booster from the Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2, 9.5-inch/10-inch split fitment wheels with Michelin PS4 tires, a rear subframe with stiffer bushings and a rear toe-link from Shelby GT500.

The all-new and limited-edition 2021 Mustang Mach 1 will arrive in U.S. and Canadian Ford dealerships in the spring of 2021.
